Washington State's drunk driving laws are tough.
Washington's DUI laws are tough. If you are convicted of Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, you are facing a mandatory sentence that includes a minimum of one or two days in jail and license suspension ranging from 90 days to one year. You will also be required to have an ignition interlock device put into your car for a period of one year and you will be required to obtain an alcohol evaluation and complete any treatment recommendations.
But it is important to understand that an arrest or charge for Renton DUI is NOT a conviction. You have a number of specific state and federal statutory and constitutional rights that may have been violated during your stop, arrest, or drunk driving processing. If so, we may be able to suppress and throw out critical evidence in your case.
What happens next?
Here's what you need to know right out of the box. First, the clock is ticking on your Washington state driving privileges. If you have recently been arrested on a charge of Renton DUI and, back at the station, you either provided a breath sample above .08 or allegedly refused to provide a sample, you only have 20 DAYS to challenge your WA Department of Licensing Suspension.
You will also be required to appear for an arraignment in either King County District Court or at the Renton Municipal court. At this court appearance, you will enter a plea of not guilty and the matter will be set for a Pre-trial Hearing. If at all possible, you should have an attorney retained prior to your arraignment.
